The policies and guidelines for the countervandalism IRC channels are fairly basic; common sense is the best rule. All policies and guidelines should be followed by all users of the channel.
They provide for the smooth and efficient operation of the channel; users who are unwilling or unable to abide by the policies and guidelines should not use the channel. It is important to note that the channel is not owned or operated by Wikipedia or the CVN; it is owned and operated by the CVN staff.
These can be amended by the senior staff, and were last changed 26/12/2010.

Guidelines
Guidelines are highly recommended, but not mandatory. IF you break one, a staff member may ask you to stop what you are doing. If you break guidelines in an abusive way, actions may be taken.
- Avoid vulgarity and incivility. Although Wikipedia is not censored for the protection of minors, civility and appropriateness in the countervandalism channels are required. Friendly banter or mildly suggestive chatter among the channel's users is fine, but users should remember that there are underage contributors in the channel, and avoid bringing disrepute to the channel, the network, or the project.
- Avoid excessive chatter. While off-topic discussion is an integral part of the camaraderie that the channel encourages, it is essential that the channel remain usable. There should never be so much off-topic discussion that requests for assistance or questions cannot be efficiently answered.
- Avoid arguments. Do not argue in the channel, even civilly. The channel is not the place to discuss controversial issues, nor is it the place to confront other users. Try using private messages or another channel instead.
- Avoid keeping operator access unless it is being actively used.
- Avoid repeatedly giving pointless bot commands.
Policies
Policies are mandatory. Users deliberately or repeatedly violating one of policies may be immediately kicked and banned. Actions taken against confirmed users should be reported to staff
- Do not use the channel for tests. The channel is intended for edit reports; this is impeded by testing bots in the channel. Use a private channel instead.
- Do not attack another user, even if you were provoked or don't mean it. This does not affect good-natured ribbing; common sense applies.
- Do not use inflammatory or disparaging language, including racist, sexist, homophobic, and religious terms. This also applies to such terms used casually, such as "this is so gay".
- Do not threaten another user, project, or channel in any way.
- Do not interfere with the channel or bots. Examples of interference would include using the bots to flood the channel, attempting to prevent others from gaining or using legitimate access, or attempting to prevent use of the channel by users or staff.
- Do not use inappropriate names. Use common sense; avoid using names associated with abuse or inflammatory or derogatory terms.
- Public logging is permitted across the network.
- The authority of the senior staff is absolute. Staff and Senior staff have a higher authority in say of what happens over a local operator.
Final Note
The channel's policies and guidelines are set to provide for the smooth and efficient operation of the channel(s). Users who are unwilling or unable to abide by the policies and guidelines should not use the channel(s); those who violate the policies and guidelines will be removed from the channel(s).
